Vincenzo Agnetti, ora in Vincenzo Agnetti.

I wanted to set a number of axioms on a durable material.
Interest in a screen that would have an educational appearance (like a blackboard) that would lend the visual impact a sense of strength, resistance, authenticity and the maxims of the phrases inscribed upon it.
The phrases are of various kinds: axioms, statements, paradoxes, invented propositions, tautologies, contradictions and so on.
The geometric symbols illustrate the contradictions or the meaning of the phrase. The early works were born out of from attempts to find very precise definitions in geometry. The phrases are all my own: some are drawn from previous writings (De Repubblica, Indulgentia, To You Who Have Not Yet Been Born, etc.), others invented.

“Assioma” is the title of these works, even though they are only rarely axiomatic propositions. Through diagrams and phrases, these works express tautologies and contradictions.
The Assiomi remain a counter-argument to what I have set out in my earlier works based on the relativity of written language. […]
The Assiomi essentially represent an exaggerated seriousness, even though at times the fiction breaks down due to the mental processing. […]
Vincenzo Agnetti, now in Vincenzo Agnetti. Scritti d’arte (1959–1981), edited by F. Boragina, Abscondita, Milan 2024, p. 154.

“To poetise is to measure”, runs a Heideggerian adage that neatly embraces certain artistic research of recent decades. Agnetti’s Assioma, exhibited at The Open Box, states: “Measuring space is solely and exclusively an act of territorial appropriation”. Starting out from this work, Filippo Manzini (Florence, 1975), has remained true to his artistic practice of recent years and constructed a device characterised by unstable equilibrium or controlled stability, emblematically titled Lo spazio sottratto (2026). The exhibition space, along with the works and materials it contains – skilfully calibrated, measured and positioned – becomes a “screen” or a “territory” to be contemplated rather than “invaded”. To write poetry is to measure, as suggested above; to be more precise, to write poetry is to measure the in-between (das Zwischen) between sky and earth. Not wishing – nor being able – to “embalm” these works with a strictly Heideggerian interpretation of a Hölderlinian scent, it is best to “forget by heart” the thoughts and verses that have shaped the history of humanity and to look instead at the gap, or the interstices, between these beams, lines, lights and shadows that Manzini has organically composed, creating a provisional relationship between spaces, materials and bodies. And this poetics, or this creative act, harmonises well with an exhibition that lasts but a few hours. Manzini’s “measurements”, Operazioni (since 2024) – extremely short videos begun in 2024 and still in progress – are also “minimal” processes, yet highly charged with poetry; they form part of his repertoire, or territory, non-invasive yet contemplative; dialectical moments that lead to Lo spazio sottratto.
