Vladimir Jankélévitch, Il puro e l’impuro, 1960

Our past is lost forever, and is forever irretrievable.
Vladimir Jankélévitch, Le Pur et l’impur, 1960
When Silvia Ileana Listorti and I began sharing our thinking about The Open Box, we were literal,in the sense that for us this space has always been a cube.
Initially, we wanted to invert the space, that is, to make the faces fold in on themselves from the outside. We followed a path of graphite, and the cut traversed the space. Luciano Fabro (Attaccapanni, 1978) presented the question: “What is the weight of light?” He subsequently suggested that we treat the space as an “anechoic chamber”, involving the observer in a “bottomless” corporeal process in order to keep the discovery intact “before it disappears”.
The white would give way to “writing”, at the tempo of the space. Hence the title “primultimità” – primultisme in the original French expression used by Vladimir Jankélévitch in Le Pur et l’impur (1960): the “regret and nostalgia” of the “first-last time”, “the farewell to the beginning and
innocence”. In this “infinite opening of futurition”, we could hardly ignore “the news that reaches us”, as the Romanian poet Nina Cassian writes (Numărătoarea inversă, 1983).
And so, returning to the space that we initially thought we would invert, we ultimately decided to
open it up, present its emptiness and listen to its silences.
At the centre, déjà vu-like, a terracotta “cube” incised with graphite: a silent night listens, displaying the outline of an ear. The cube is a “face with an unfathomable meaning”, writes Georges Didi-Huberman in Le Cube et le visage (1993), it is a silent mass, an object of time that carries
within its geometry a promise of alteration, the “visible moment of its own destiny”. Se le orecchie vedono e gli occhi ascoltano (If the ears see and the eyes listen, 2025) the vision of this reversal, between continuous space and the observer comes true, relativising and revealing the parts.
Hence this is what our cube is: a “block of the uncanny”, an unheimlich object, an abstract form for every particle of reality.
