Sostanza incerta di Gianni Caravaggio è un blocco di marmo nero ricoperto da un cielo stellato di carta, una fotografia che riproduce un universo appena nato, con alcune lacerazioni. L’artista offre un dono da scartare con la mente. Un dono di cui resterà sempre oscura la sostanza ultima. Caravaggio vela, svela e rivela l’ambiguità della creazione. Avvolge e stravolge, accarezza e strappa. Molteplici polarità – marmo e carta, morbido e duro, leggero e pesante, scultura e fotografia – vivono in un abbraccio, pur mantenendo la loro specifica autonomia. Sono separati da una distanza infinitesimale. Probabilmente è il lavoro più “enigmatico” prodotto da Gianni Caravaggio. Un lavoro di transizione. Un connubio ambiguo tra l’apparenza e l’essenza o il fenomeno e il noumeno. Entrano in crisi le classiche categorie di contenuto e contenitore. Riflette sull’infinito e sull’indeterminato, sullo spazio e sul tempo. Concetti umani e cosmici sicuramente pensabili ma difficilmente definibili in modo univoco e definitivo. Le lacerazioni lasciano intravedere l’“in-visto” tra porzioni di buio e frammenti di luce; sono sempre diverse, cambiano ogni qualvolta il lavoro viene mostrato. L’“in-visto” è la pietra scura con le sue venature, l’“in-visto” è il retro della carta bianca strappata. Anche in questo caso lo stupore è nuovo ogni giorno perché l’atto artistico è sempre diverso.
È più vera, più reale, più certa l’apparenza o l’essenza? Oppure entrambe vivono in simbiosi o in antitesi, condizionandosi o ignorandosi reciprocamente? Si può vivere in un corpo fatto solo di pelle o solo di carne? Si può pensare il tempo senza lo spazio o lo spazio senza il tempo?
L’ambiguità del dubbio genera vita. Un invito alla scoperta. L’opera è un godimento pensante.
La scultura sembrerebbe sussurrare: “Il cielo stellato sopra di me, la legge morale dentro di me”. La celebre frase kantiana appare però troppo determinata per un’opera non illuminista ma illuminata; Caravaggio, infatti, in compagnia di Novalis, è già in viaggio verso il tempio di Sais.
Probabilmente l’oggetto e il soggetto o l’artista e il lavoro, guardano alla “totalità”, ovvero alla poesia. La poesia è una matematica senza limiti, è arte infinitamente creatrice.
Il nuovo universo appena nato può continuare la sua vita.

Sostanza incerta / Uncertain substance by Gianni Caravaggio is a block of black marble covered with a starry sky of paper, a photograph reproducing a new-born universe, with several lacerations. The artist is offering a gift to be unwrapped with the mind. A gift of which the ultimate substance will always remain obscure. Caravaggio veils, unveils and reveals the ambiguity of creation. He wraps, shakes, caresses and tears. Multiple polarities – marble and paper, soft and hard, light and heavy, sculpture and photography – coexist in an embrace, while still maintaining their own independence. Separated by an infinitesimal distance. This is probably the most “enigmatic” work produced by Gianni Caravaggio. A transitional work. An ambiguous marriage between appearance and essence or phenomenon and noumenon. The classic categories of content and container are thrown into disarray. The work reflects on the infinite and the indeterminate, on space and on time. Human and cosmic concepts that are without doubt conceivable but difficult to define unequivocally and definitively. The lacerations allow glimpses of the “unseen”, including portions of darkness and fragments of light; they are always different, changing every time the work is shown. The “unseen” is the dark stone and its veining, the “unseen” is the back of the torn white paper. In this case too, the wonder is renewed each day because the artistic act is always different.
Is appearance or essence more true, more real, more certain? Or do both exist in symbiosis or in antithesis, conditioning or ignoring one another? Can one live in a body composed of just skin or just flesh? Can one conceive of time without space or space without time?
The ambiguity of the doubt generates life. An invitation to discovery. The work is a thinking enjoyment.
The work would appear to be whispering: “The starry heavens above me and the moral law within me”. However, this celebrated Kantian phrase appears overly certain for a work that is enlightened rather than illuminist is illuminated; Caravaggio in the company of Novalis is in fact already travelling towards the temple of Sais.
The object and the subject or the artist and the work probably look towards “totality”, or rather towards poetry. Poetry is a mathematics without limits, it is infinitely creative art.
The recently born new universe can continue with its life.
